The 4-4-2 (pronounced four, four, two) was introduced in 1964. The name referred to its 4-barrel carburetor, 4-speed manual transmission, and dual exhaust. The 4-4-2 package was derived from GM's BO-9 police package as an answer to the GTO at Pontiac. Both cars were built on the same platform as an intermediate-sized muscle car. The Pontiac was based on their Tempest model, and Oldsmobile on their (soon to be Cutlass and Cutlass Supreme) F-85 line.Â
By the time 1967 rolled around, GM marketing had redefined the meaning of 4-4-2. It now stood for the 400 cubic inch engine, 4-barrel carb, and dual exhaust. The car had also been given a facelift the year before with only minor changes for 1967. Some of those features unique to 1967 include the louvered hood, optional front disc brakes, and larger intake valves on the high-compression 400 cubic inch engine. The 4-4-2 option was only available on the Cutlass Supreme that year, the three body styles being the Convertible, the Sport Coupe (with the B-post pillar), and the Holiday Hardtop Coupe. The 400 engine was rated at a conservative 350hp with 440lb-ft of torque. You had the choice of a 3-speed Muncie (manual), 4-speed manual (opt.), or the 3 speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission. The suspension utilized coil springs at all four corners, with the 4-4-2 receiving special boxed lower control arms, heavy duty springs and shocks, and thicker sway bars front and rear. The "Cutlass Supreme" moniker was reduced to a "CS" surrounding the Oldsmobile emblem on the rear trunk lid, and 4-4-2 badges appeared on the dash, rear decklid, front fenders, and unique front grill.
24,833 F-85's made it to customers in 1967, the final year for this generation of Oldsmobile 4-4-2.
This well-preserved Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Holiday Hardtop Coupe with the 4-4-2 package rolled off the Lansing Michigan line in the third week of November 1967. It left the factory wearing Burgundy Mist paint.Â
Power was provided by a 400 cubic inch High Compression V8, topped with a 4 barrel Quadrajet carburetor. A 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic transmission and open rear differential completed the package. It rolled out of the factory on 14"Â wheels with redline tires, and was optioned with power steering and front-wheel disc power brakes. Air conditioning was declined.
The optional bucket seats on either side of the center console were trimmed in Black vinyl with Deluxe seatbelts installed to hold the driver in place.Â
The history of this beautiful Oldsmobile is not known up until July 1, 2013 when the car was purchased from Ellingson Classic Cars in Rogers, MN. The odometer registered 12,394 miles in 2013. In the 8 years following, just over 18,000 miles were driven,, making this a very well-sorted classic.
Over the last 8 years, the owner elected to make some changes in order to make the car more pleasant to drive.Â
The stock intake and 4 barrel Quadrajet were replaced with Edelbrock pieces. The Olds 455 intake is fed by an Edelbrock 650cfm AVS2 carburetor, which makes for easy starting and very smooth power.
The 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic transmission was removed in favor of a 700R4 automatic, which makes highway driving a pleasure and the shifts tight under hard acceleration.
17" American Racing Torque Thrust wheels are wrapped in period-correct redline tires. Behind them is an upgraded front drilled and slotted disc brake kit which provide more than adequate stopping power.
Finally, the dash, sill plates, and center console were fitted with a wood trim kit, which go well with the black and chrome trimmed interior.
All of the pinstriping was painted on by hand.
Paperwork from 2013 to present has been saved.
Included in the sale is the original chrome air cleaner and a set of aftermarket seat covers.
