When I got Captain, it was apparent right away by the spots on my garage floor that he could use a little love under the hood. Having been regularly driven the past 7 years, some of the gaskets and seals were leaking a little bit of oil. After replacing the offending gaskets, I performed a compression test to determine the overall health of his 400 cubic inch heart. The results were very consistent and averaged around 150 on all eight cylinders. He should live a long time and my garage floor will stay clean.
The previous owner spent some time making Captain more drivable. The stock intake and carburetor were replaced with Edelbrock pieces, the latter going through a couple iterations until the AVS2 was finally installed. According to Edelbrock, "The Edelbrock AVS2 Series features annular flow primary boosters with a new calibration for improved off idle and cruising. The annular flow booster design also delivers improved fuel atomization to eliminate flat spots that can be encountered during idle to full throttle transitions." In other words, a smoother fuel delivery which improves a daily driver experience. I've never used one, but can attest to its responsiveness and ease of starting. The engine idles smoothly and the power comes on in a very linear way.
